The transnational connection – Christina provides insights into working for PwC Cairo & Switzerland

28/04/23

Christina was born and raised in Cairo, Egypt. Being half Swiss and half Egyptian, she has always kept the connection to both countries while studying as well as gaining work experience in consulting.

1. Where did your path lead you within PwC?

Having worked as a consultant during my studies, I wanted to further explore corporate consultancy after my graduation. That’s why I joined the Risk Assurance Department in PwC Cairo. The one-month internship turned into seven months, and I really enjoyed learning and growing professionally.

The master’s programme I wanted to do, tough, was in Switzerland and I had to decide to either start a full-time position as a consultant at PwC Cairo or move to Switzerland to study. I decided to do the latter and explore life in Switzerland.  Interestingly enough, I was back at PwC four years later, just in a different country.

"Initially, I thought that the sharing and networking culture at PwC Cairo is because Egyptians are very outgoing. But after spending almost two years at PwC Switzerland I can confirm that it’s a PwC thing which lives across the countries and even continents."

2. Your connection to Egypt didn’t end then. While being employed at PwC Switzerland as an associate in the P&O team, you went on a secondment to Egypt.

Yes, I went back to PwC Cairo for a short period of time where I met many interesting people. One of the most special experiences was the commute to the office where I met people from different teams. Commuting together every day turned us into a community which made even the long distances or being stuck in traffic jams a fun experience.

On my secondment, I mostly worked with public clients. It was fascinating to see how these types of companies operate. One of the challenges was working in Arabic, which was a new experience for me since prior to that I’d always worked in an English or German speaking environment. Being able to work in Arabic, though, helped me get out of my comfort zone and learn to adapt to difficult situations.

Were you able to have any additional learnings from having worked for both PwC Cairo and Switzerland?

Initially, I thought that the sharing and networking culture at PwC Cairo is because Egyptians are very outgoing. But after spending almost two years at PwC Switzerland I can confirm that it’s a PwC thing which lives across the countries and even continents.

So with that in mind, feel free to reach out to me in case you’d like to know more about PwC Cairo or just get to know each other over a shared coffee.
