Why sustainable performance is important for your wellbeing and growth

«Working sustainably is a skill everyone can learn.”, says Miriam Baumgärtner, Sustainable Performance and Wellbeing Leader at PwC Switzerland. As a former researcher, she’s keen to point to empirical data. And there’s plenty of research stating that a sustainable routine is the foundation for personal growth and success: “By establishing a high-performance routine that proactively recharges our personal batteries, we can be well and work well.” But where do we start and what exactly does a high-performance routine entail?

Sustainable performance needs to be tackled on three layers, namely on an individual, team/leadership and firm level. In this article, we’d like to focus on the individual level because it all starts with you!

Developing a routine that supports your sustainable performance is the starting point. We’ve asked some of our people what that routine looks like for them.

Have a look at Catijn video here to learn more about her sustainable routine:

Gian-Andrea - Sustainable Perfomance Routine

Gian-Andrea’s tip for sustainable performance:

“I’m an active person and like to go to the gym or be outdoors with friends to maintain my balance. This summer, I’m benefitting from taking some weeks off and compensating overtime. First, I’ll be in Greece to enjoy the weather and nature. Afterwards, I’ll be going to New York, which I’m very excited about.”

Miriam emphasises that change happens gradually, and the key is to start small and be consistent: “It’s really about making tiny, conscious adaptations in your daily life which make a big impact over time. For example, start the day intentionally by taking a couple of minutes to write down the three main goals for the day. Go on a ten-minute walk after lunch to get some fresh air and daylight. Do a five-minute journaling excercise to close open loops or listen to your favourite music (and dance) for five minutes after finishing work to clear your head and switch off.”

For Miriam, being with friends is important to recharge and gain perspective. Watch her video here:

So, what’s your number one tip for a sustainable routine?
