Swiss Sustainability Reporting Excellence Awards 2024

Setting new benchmarks in Swiss sustainability reporting

Welcome to the Swiss Sustainability Reporting Excellence Awards 2024

PwC Switzerland and the University of St. Gallen’s Institute for Law and Economics (ILE-HSG) are leading the way in Swiss sustainability reporting: We are proud to present awards that recognise pioneering efforts, drive progress, and promote excellence in Swiss sustainability reporting.

In recent years, sustainability and ESG (environmental, social, governance) criteria have evolved from being peripheral concerns to central topics in society, politics, business, and among investors. Non-financial reporting has grown in importance due to stringent regulatory requirements and its role in creating lasting value for stakeholders and society. At PwC, we believe that sustainability reporting is more than just another disclosure tool – it’s a catalyst for transformative change.

In recognition of the critical role of sustainability in corporate responsibility and business success, PwC Switzerland and the University of St. Gallen’s Institute for Law and Economics (ILE-HSG) are pleased to launch the Swiss Sustainability Reporting Excellence Awards. These annual awards, to be presented for the first time on 16 October 2024, will honour companies that exemplify excellence in sustainability reporting. By celebrating these leaders, we aim to identify those who set new standards and encourage continuous improvement in sustainability reporting.

About the awards

The Swiss Sustainability Reporting Excellence Awards evaluate a diverse selection of companies, including both public interest entities listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and privately held firms with a turnover of at least CHF 1 billion. These organisations disclose sustainability information in sustainability reports, annual reports, or integrated reports. For our 2024 Awards we considered sustainability information on the financial year 2023 reporting period published until 30.06.2024.

Based on a methodology developed by the ILE-HSG in line with latest research insights, we assess companies’ sustainability disclosures, focusing on quality, transparency and comprehensiveness of their sustainability reporting. Our aim is to identify and recognise those that demonstrate excellence in sustainability reporting and set new standards in the field.

The selected companies cover a wide range of fields. They span academic and educational services, basic materials, consumer cyclicals, consumer non-cyclicals, energy, financials, government activity, healthcare, industrials, real estate, technology, utilities as well as institutions, associations, and organisations. This diversity ensures that our ratings and benchmarks are robust and representative of the Swiss market.

Methodology

The Swiss Sustainability Reporting Excellence Awards evaluate companies with a combination of objective criteria and subjective judgement to ensure a comprehensive and fair assessment.

Objective criteria

Using recognised statistical methods, we assess four objective criteria without any discretionary judgement.

One key aspect of our evaluation is the readability of sustainability reports. Using the FOG index, we measure how accessible the language is, rewarding reports that use clear and simple language suitable for a broad audience.

Another important criterion is data screening. We calculate the GRI Disclosure Score based on the GRI Content Index, measuring the extent to which companies disclose ESG information.

We also consider the weighting of topics in reports. By analysing the emphasis on environment, social, and governance topics, we ensure that companies address issues relevant to their industry standards. For instance, financial institutions should put a strong focus on governance topics.

Finally, we measure the NLTK sentiment score to assess whether the tonality is well balanced and reflects both positive and negative aspects of the company’s sustainability performance. A balanced report gives a true and fair picture that is not overly positive.

Subjective judgement

We apply manual content analysis to assess the overall impression and credibility as well as the design and accessibility of the sustainability reports. While our assessment follows a precise coding scheme, this step involves subjective judgement.

A panel of experts evaluates the overall impression and credibility of each report to determine whether it genuinely reflects the company’s sustainability efforts or is merely self-promotional. Hereby, the panel considers several key factors, including previous year values, adherence to established standards and frameworks, the quality and extent of stakeholder dialogue, and the results of external assurance.

We also assess the design and accessibility of the report. We consider how easy the report can be found on the company’s website, whether it is available as an interactive online version, and if it includes user-friendly navigation tools. Additionally, we evaluate the availability of the report in multiple languages, the inclusion of a comprehensive table of contents, and the use of clear graphics to enhance understanding.

Excellence in sustainability reporting goes beyond compliance—it's about leading by example, fostering transparency, and driving change towards more sustainable business. The Swiss Sustainability Reporting Excellence Awards recognize those who set the bar and inspire others.
